So my Guzzi Eldorado is all back together, and ready for an MoT. But! I have bought three new clutch cables, from two different sources, and none of them fit the lever end, the barrel nipple is too big?  I do happen to have two old original Moto Guzzi cables and these fit with no issues, so I have had to refit an old cable for now. I shall try to order a cable from the US and see if that fits? I wonder if any others have had a problem with these new cables?

I just bought new shocks for the Guzzi Eldo, I decided to use YSS again after having a good experience with the one I fitted to my old BMW R80st. I also decided to trust Bike Revival again to supply the new shocks as they were very good to deal with last time, and this time again they never disappointed, great service and good communication.

Headwork.

I mentioned a while back that I had an issue with the exhaust thread on one of my Guzzi heads,  and so with a repair in mind I ordered up a threaded insert to fix the problem, well that was way back in July, and as of today there is still no sign of it turning up! So instead a couple of months back I set too looking for a good used head to use instead, and lucky for me, one of the Guzzi guys in the US, had one he would send, for just the price of the postage, and he did.

So I pulled the heads from the bike and sent them off to be cleaned, and took the time while they were away to order new valves and guides, these duly arrived, so I took the whole lot to a local engineer to have the guides fitted. Of course in this modern age nothing you buy as a replacement part fits any more, and such was the case with the new valve guides, they were too large, and the engineers had to take three thou off them to make them fit. But finally I got them back, the seats had been cut too, so it just took a little light grinding in, to get them right, and after a leak test all was good, and they are now ready to be re fitted this weekend.

The Guzzi Chronicles …

Once again the Guzzi finds itself in bits, this time the heads are off again, and are away to have new valve guides fitted. A year has slipped by since I bought the Guzzi, and I am still finding things that need attention.  A year, wow where did that go, the Guzzi has been fun over the last year, fun, but frustrating too.

One of the problems I have had since owning the bike has been the right hand exhaust lock nut thread on the head, some time in the past, the nut has come loose and damaged the threads. So one of the Guzzi guys in the US sent me a head with good threads, but as I was unsure of the valves I have decided to do the valves and guides on both heads at the same time.

Now I have only done a little over 600 miles I guess, since fitting the new barrels and pistons, so I was a little surprised to see the amount of carbon build up on the new pistons for such a short amount of use. Also their was damage to the head gasket on the right hand side too. A split at the oil way, and on both sides some damage to the main copper seal?

One of the things I have decided to do this winter is to refurbish the heads on my Guzzi Ambo, So I have bought new valves and guides ready to pull the heads apart, this should then finish the top end on my bike, as I have already done the cylinders and pistons, etc.

Life don’t get much sweeter!

Ok then here are the pics from the Rally…

At short notice I decided to attend the V-Twin rally down in Fordingbridge on the edge of the New Forest, down in Hampshire, I thought it was about time to give my Ambo “Black Bess”  it’s first rally, and as a couple of friends were going, I loaded up the bike for the first time, and headed out.
Now this long weekend coincides with with the last week of the school holidays, so you can guess what the roads were like, they were rammed full of people trying to get away. But I pointed my old bike south, and just filtered through the long lines of standing traffic, the sun shining, a warm breeze blowing, and my Guzzi rattling away underneath me, and taking the miles in its stride.

About an hour into the journey I pulled into a service station, to give the bike and myself a rest, and as the Guzzi ticked away as the motor cooled down I looked it over for signs of oil, and Nothing, not a drop, all was dry. so twenty minutes later I once again started the old thing up, and headed South again on the last leg of my journey, this time it was the small scenic roads across the New Forest, and the worst lunch I have ever eaten, courtesy of the Fighting Cocks just outside Fordingbridge! avoid it with a very long pole, I wonder how you can both overcook something, and still serve it cold?  Ten minutes later though and I was pulling into Rally central, and signing in, to a very busy rally field.

So Come the morning, I ride. Where you ask, well South of course, where else would you ride for the weekend?

The camping gear is ready, I have a day off work, and the weekend is a long one, as it is our late summer break or August bank holiday, where the powers that be, give us Monday off as well.  But where am I headed I hear you cry, in the combined tortured voices of people who have to work and not ride.

I now have my Guzzi at a stage where I feel I am able trust it for its first camping trip, it did well last weekend with the trip to Popham, so this weekend we shall try a little further, and a trip to the New Forest down in Hampshire, and a camp at the 37th International V-Twin Rally.  So come the morning , I ride.
