A Nod to the Weather Gods…

I had a lot to do today, what with trying to sell my house, all the paperwork, packing, sorting etc. But I also needed to give the Beemer the once over before heading off to Belgium and the John Bull rally on Thursday.

So I was a little downhearted this morning with everything being wet, following a night of unusually strong winds, and rain. But a coffee and a half later the sun came out, the pavement outside my house dried up, and I set to.

First thing to do was pull the plugs, and they showed the bike was running a little rich, a byproduct of me playing with the carbs over the easter weekend, trying to get rid of a throttle close backfire. The it was time to pull the rocker covers and check the valve clearences. This is such an easy job on a beemer, and a few minutes later they were all deemed to be ok, no adjustment needed.
So bolt that lot back together and fit new plugs. Then it was time to change out the gearbox oil again, I only did this last weekend, but after I had done the job, I found the drain plug crush washer had dropped off, so I decided to do the job again, a waste of transmission oil, but no oil leaks.
Lastly it was time to wind the pilot screws in an eighth of a turn on both carbs to lean them up a little, before running the bike up, while I tidy the tools away.

and just as I finished up, the rain came down again.
Perfect.

I have been laid up now for three weeks, since my trip into hospital, so as such I have not done anything motorcycle related, which I find frustrating. The weather is what you expect this time of year, wet, windy, and getting cold. But mixed in with that are some real nice chilly sunny days, days like today when you would like to get out for a ride, and get some pictures of what remains of the autumn colours.

So, I have things to do on all three bikes when I feel better, and able to do it. my R80st has been with me now for five or six years, I forget which, but it was bought as a project back on an October day, and dragged back here in the back of my van.  Right now it needs a couple of pushrod seals changing, this will be the second time I have done these since the bike has been in my ownership. But I might wait to do this until the new year.

My Moto Guzzi Ambassador also needs a little work right now, and I shall put this one at the front of the que. I am waiting on a couple of parts to arrive right now,  one being a used cylinder head for the right hand side, as the one fitted has lost the exhaust threads, so the exhaust is glued in place! it has been working Ok, but it is a job that I have wanted to do for a while.  So I am debating on whether to do the valves and guides on both heads at the same time? I shall see when the replacement head gets here.

I also have some new springs on order to fit in the distributor, the small springs that go on the throw out weights, this should be a fun fiddly little job. I also want to change the front brake shoes, as they scream loudly when applied, working better than a horn, and surprising all around.

And of course my Norton project.

I still have a long list of jobs to do on this bike, and a long list of parts to find also.  But I have the wheels sitting here with new tyres fitted, so as soon as I am able to go and get it from the metal basher, I should at last have it up on two wheels. I can then set to with fitting the motor, and gearbox, and maybe even getting it all wired up. While I look around for the other main parts I need to get it somewhere towards being finished. I do however have a fairly long list of parts that I now need to concentrate on finding.

Chain cases, clutch assembly, headlight, switches, mudguards, stays, magneto, dynamo, carburettor brakes, both front and back, Now this may not seem a lot, but there are some tricky parts to find in there.  I also have some smaller parts that need making up on the lathe, steering stops, plunger caps, etc. I also want to get my oil and petrol tanks in to be painted, I have thought long and hard over this one, as there are so many different styles of paint on these bikes that have been done over the years. But I have scoured the internet for ideas, and I think I will go for something like one of these…

Riding October, a Norfolk Camp…

I managed to get a last camp in before I was laid up for medical reasons, a short visit to hospital has put paid to my motorcycling for a couple of weeks, and as we head towards winter, the evenings are closing in, and the weather has become a little unpredictable.

So the camp was arranged by members of the Britbike forum that can be found here  http://www.britbike.com/forums/ubbthreads.php and was held on the Norfolk coast, at the village of Weybourne, over a very wet and windy weekend.

I took a ride out on my Guzzi Ambo over to the Berkshire Triumph show, hosted by the local TOMCC, the sun disregarded the broadcast severe weather warning of torrential rain and flash floods, and instead beat down on us under blue sky’s all day. I do however think the weather warnings played a part in holding some of the people back, as numbers were down on last year.

The Guzzi ran better than it ever has in my ownership, the clutch was almost smooth and not grabbing in first, and even though it got quite hot in the local Saturday traffic, I had no oil leaks from the motor. That just leaves the small weeping leak from the back of the gearbox to sort out at a later date.

No Jacket Required..

Summer breeze makes me feel fine
Blowin’ through the jasmine in my mind

Sweet days of summer – the jasmine’s in bloom
July all dressed up and playing her tune
And I come home from a hard day’s work
And you’re waitin’ there
Not a care in the world

Today my friends was a no jacket day, when the sun woke up it was already warm, and by the time it had had it’s juice and coffee, it was toasty, even in the shade of the overhanging Oak trees, in the small back lanes, it was warm. The hedgerows were alive with insects, butterfly’s and birds were everywhere, and the scent of fresh flowers hung on the corner of every lane. perfect.

I got up early, as it was too warm to sleep, uncovered the bike, the BMW to be exact, clipped a camera to the rack, and headed out into the small country lanes in the direction of south Oxfordshire. I had heard a rumour, that there was to be a display of sports cars on an industrial estate in a small village a few miles from my home. So I thought it would be fun to try to find it, and see what was there, and as it was early, I may get some pictures before the world wakes up, well that was the plan.

The morning was about as perfect as an English morning could be, hardly a soul out in the lanes, the bike burbling along like the waters of a small brook, I found myself just drifting along those little back lanes, open face helmet, t-shirt, and soft leather gloves, it really doesn’t get much better than this. So after zigzagging for a few miles, I arrived at the village, but there were no signs up yet to point the way, but I found a sign for an industrial estate so followed that. A little way further down one of the lanes, I turned a corner and whooow, I had found what I was looking for.

Well now that winter is starting to fade away, I had a play with the Guzzi Sunday morning in my ongoing battle with the L/H oil leak? so I pulled the rocker gear and re-torqued all the head bolts, they all seemed to be where they should be, and I never noticed any loose ones. So I bolted it all back together, adjusted the tappets, etc. the plugs were a fantastic grey colour, so the mixture seems to be on the money.
I then gave it a little choke, turned on the fuel, and hit the starter, and she just fired right up, fantastic considering it has been sitting for a month in this cold (for us) weather. I never got a chance to give it a ride, but let it warm up in the garage.
I have now ordered a gasket set, so will pull the heads in a week or two, to see if I can find where the oil is coming from, this will also give me a chance to check the bores too.
This old Ambo was on Ebay USA,  looks a bit sad right now, but will be a great project for someone, it also has some nice parts on it, like those little rear passenger foot plates..

I wonder who bought it? it would be good to see it back on the road.

I also got to play with my BMW R80ST, this old bike suffers from the weather, because I make it live out on the street,  and because we have had windy weather, blowing the road salt around, the clutch cable had gone a little rusty, and so needed replacing. As it happens I have had a spare in my panniers for over a year, I like to take a spare when out on a trip, it just makes sense.  So I pulled the old cable, and half an hour later the new one was in place, it then took me close to an hour to get it adjusted, there is just so little room at the back of the gearbox to get to the adjuster.

But it was done soon enough, and I took it for a test ride on a cold but dry sunday morning. It was nice to be back riding a bike, and now I am looking forward to some nice spring weather.

End of the year….

Well we get ever closer to the end of another year, the weather has been aweful of late, with constant rain, it is a bit like having a monsoon period, it just seems to never end. And as such, I have not done much in the way of motorcycles, no pictures, and nothing really to report. So I shall just post a couple of odd pictures from the year so far.
