Sunday Rambling…

I managed to start the old 62 Panhead this morning, 50 weight oil, cold garage and wet sump, can make it a little sticky! but a little blast of easy start helped get it moving. So I took it for a short ride on a quiet Sunday morning…Sunday Rambling…

Sunday Morning on the Panhead

A little later after checking up on my old mum, I took a drive over to see Terry, as he mentioned at Kempton that he had just finished the Vincent he had been building. This really is one mans vision on how a Vincent should be put together, not one for the purists, and all built from parts and hand made pieces. The bike looks great in the pictures, but it is even better up close and personal.

Today I headed into North West London, to collect my 1951 Harley WL45 from Toshi at Bell 45. Tosh has sorted out the wiring faults for me, and now the whole charging system works as it should without blowing bulbs.

While there he also checked over some other faults, and pointed out issues that will need to be programmed in for future repairs. Nothing too serious, but things to think about.

A Surprise at Kempton…

So Saturday was another Kempton Jumble, the last one of 2015, and as usual I attended, and it was a good day out. But as I walked across the car park towards the entrance gate, I had a bit of a surprise, for there in the bike park, was a nice old Harley 45, and it looked a lot like my one. As I got closer I could get a better look, and it was indeed my bike!

Toshi of Bell 45, who has been sorting out my charging issues, had taken the bike for a test ride, and was happy to inform me that all was working as it should now, and the bike was almost ready to come back home.

DGR, The Oxford Ride…

Sunday saw me heading North towards Oxford, for Sunday was the day, the worldwide Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, and as I posted earlier, I was taking part in the Oxford ride here in the UK. But the promised sunny start never happened, as I left Newbury I had rain, and mist patches, typical!
Although as I approached Oxford services, the clouds moved away, the sun broke through, and the temps warmed up, perfect. So lets see what was about…

It was a real good turn out on a perfect autumn day, and after a slow ride around Oxford city, we headed for the pub and lunch.

I did hear that Oxford raised the second highest amount of money in the UK, behind London. raising somewhere around the £20K mark, well done everyone.

So my local Garage proprietor (Mark), and a friend (Graham) , invited all the local Harley Shovel owners out for a photo shoot and breakfast. Now as sometimes happens over here in the UK, this ride out coincided with a stunningly perfect sunny day, in fact it couldn’t have been any better.

So 7-30am and the first frost of autumn saw me uncovering the 75 shovelled, and wheeling it out to the road, in an effort not to wake my local residents, and then on empty roads I was off for fuel and a twenty five mile ride to meet up with the others in a lay-by on the Berkshire Oxfordshire border. As you will see, eleven shovel’s turned up, and a few other later models too.Get

I was heading out today to attend the Popham wings and Motorcycle day at Popham airfield, I have been attending this for a few years now, and have never failed to get there, until today.

My newly acquired Harley WL 750 side valve let me down when all the sparks went on strike! not sure where they have gone, but gone they have. I was rumbling along on a sunny Saturday, when it started missing and backfiring, and then dropped to one cylinder, then died. Battery was dead.
No lights, no horn, no spark? Dead!
So a quick call to the recovery team had me waiting around for a while,so I checked all the connections and wires, but nothing obvious, I did however get a dim glow from the lights again. So I am guessing that either the regulator or dynamo have packed up. We shall see.

And this one was no exception…

I got to ride two of my Harley’s on Saturday, and then Sunday saw me out on my Norton Commando. But first I had to empty the sump of oil from where it had been stood idle for so long, then I fitted a new battery, and we were good to go.
